Travel // Skiing Europe Spotlight – Livigno, Italy

Europe, Italy, Travel, Travel / Wednesday, January 17th, 2018

Right now we have a major ski crush on Livigno.  A little like Aspen in it’s village style, it’s absolutely a place where people come to be seen more than to ski (which is pretty fabulous for skiiers, because the slopes are pretty consistently wide open!) We loved the area so much during our visit over Christmas, that we recently went back this past weekend for the MLK 4-day weekend.

Lodging

I cannot recommend Hotel Posta enough, for accomodations in Livigno.  We got an amazing deal on a family room (two rooms – one queen and 2 twin, shared bathroom).  Breakfast was included, (Tyler and Mom loved the made to order omlettes) and I could have drank the Lavazza cappucinos all day!  *Julian and Yamila in the restaurant were wonderful 😉  The hotel is technically ski-in/out, however it’s more ski-in and less ski-out, unless you’re skinning up the mountain (which Tyler did, and really liked how accessible it was).  The hotel is about a 2 minute walk onto the main street (shopping, dining, etc.), and a 6-minute walk from the Mottolino gondola (and Kosmo).

Families, Couples…Great for Literally Everyone.

On our first visit over the holidays, we traveled with our little babe sans sitter and traded baby duty on and off with our (very best, and fabulous baby loving) friends. [If you’re planning a ski trip with your baby, check out my post here] Childcare on the mountain is not set-up for babes under 3, so this was the best option for us during trip #1.  The M’Eating point is a great spot, accessible by gondola, if you choose to go this route.  Here you’ll find a great outdoor space with gorgeous views of the mountains, a coffee bar, and lunch spot for cafeteria style dining.  If you do have non-skiing little ones over 3, there is a kindergarten at the M’Eating Point on Mottolino which caters to 3-7 year olds from 10AM-4PM *for free*.

On this trip my wonderful Momma came to help us with Liv, and let Tyler and I enjoy some time alone during the day.  We hit Mottolino for our first day of skiing, and enjoyed a stop at our favorite mid-slope spot, Camanel di Planon, complete with outdoor fireplaces and lounge chairs with comfy blankets.  *This spot is only accessible by chairlift or skis, so it’s not a baby friendly option.*  Word to the wise, if you enjoy pear schnaaps shots, do not order them here — they taste like lighter fluid (the french fries are bomb.com though!)

For Apres ski lovers, Kosmos at the bottom of Mottolino is a great end of the day stop, and the outdoor patio is complete with heaters, and can be a great meeting spot at the end of the day.  The outdoor area can absolutely be child friendly, but the music indoors can be loud, and should be avoided with the little ones.

Carosello 3000 also has a gondola accessible restaurant on the mountain, the Refreshment Center.  Here you can enjoy the highest panoramic views, and some pretty great paninis.

All in all, Livigno is a fabulous trip if you have a few days, and are looking for some great skiing, fun people watching, and yummy Italian food.

Quickies:

Ski buses are everywhere throughout Livigno.  If traveling with little ones, leave the strollers at home as they’re not allowed on the buses.

Childcare is not available for babes under 3 years old, but for little ones 3-7, check out the M’Eating point Kindergarten from 10-4.

Free wi-fi is almost everywhere!  All mountain restaurants have wi-fi with great ranges.

If you’re in the area on a Thursday evening, I highly recommend the night skiing (on lift #23) from 2030-2230.

Dining

  • Pizza : Bait Dal Ghet // Loved the Diavolo pizzas!  Definitely make reservations, as the wait can be quite long.  We didn’t love the caprese, but the prosecco was nice 😉
  • Authentic Italian : Ristorante Cervo // One of our favorite restaurants of both trips, bar none!  ThePenne all’Arrabbiata and Lasagne were TOPS, pizza and Mezzacorona Cabernet were fabulous.  Very family friendly, and another restaurant with a changing station in the restroom (which is SO rare for Europe!)
  • Creative Italian : La Scala Bistrot  // We absolutely loved La Scala, with their cozy atmosphere and amazing staff.  The food was delicious, and a fun take on italian (try the carbonara with potato noodles!) and the downstairs area was family friendly (with bathroom space for diaper changes!) and stroller accessible.
  • Burgers : Why Not? // Super friendly staff (Alex was wonderful!) and very creative burgers!  The perfect place if you’re looking for a break from the traditional italian dish.
  • Brunch : Bivio Bistrot // A wonderful traditional european brunch buffet (available until 10:30), with fabulous coffee.  A must!

  1. Very nice post. Almost feel like I am there too. Great that your mother helped out so you could have some alone time on the slopes. Plus there is a European food brunch buffet with great coffee? That would send me over the moon. Must go there.
