Travel // Skiing Europe

Eastern Europe, Europe, Italy, Travel, Travel / Saturday, November 10th, 2018

Tyler and I have never been avid skiers, but with the all of the amazing mountains within arms reach of our new home we’ve caught the ski bug!  From December through March we love packing up the babe, the pup, and the VW and heading out to hit the slopes.  With ski season quickly approaching, I’m excited to share with ya’ll some of our favorite ski spots!

Cortina d’Ampezzo

Not only was Cortina our first ski trip after moving to Europe, but it was time in Italy (and first taste of authentic Italian cuisine!).  We absolutely fell in love with this charming Italian town, and felt so blessed to spend our first Christmas abroad among friends (and delicious food) in the Dolomites.  The only downside to our time in Cortina was the limited snow, however the slopes were still amazing and the town itself was enough to win our hearts.  I loved it so much, I detailed our entire trip in a previous post!  See the full post on our ski trip to Cortina d’Ampezzo –> HERE!

If you want a million options for slopes and ski bars, Sölden is a solid choice!  Situated on a glacier, Sölden is said to get snow almost 9 months out of the year!  In addition to the amazing skiing, there are some pretty fabulous resorts dotted along the main street (which means plenty of places to step away from the slopes and enjoy a day at the spa!).  Although I would not recommend Sölden for families traveling with children, this Austrian town is great for couples and crowds looking for a good time.

Livigno, Italy

We loved Livigno so much during our first visit last Christmas, that we immediately booked a return trip for the following MLK weekend!  The slopes were wide open with little to no crowding, and a variety of runs for all skill levels.  One of my favorite Apres Ski spots of all time sits on top of the mountain, and the village below is one of the most charming we’ve experienced!  I absolutely loved the hotel we scouted out (perfect for families), and you can’t be too mad about the amazing wine and pizza on every corner.  I’ve included a full detail post on our time in Livigno –> HERE!

 Krvavec Ski Resort, Slovenia

A short drive East from Lake Bled (and only minutes past the Ljubljana Airport) you’ll find Krvavec Ski Resort in Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia, the perfect mountain for active families! With two ski-in/ski-out hotels right on the mountain, and a meeting point at the bottom of the chairlifts, this was the perfect ski spot for our little family of 3 to enjoy a ski trip sans childcare. A perfect meeting point based mid-mountain (and right at the base of Hotel Krvavec), we were able to trade off baby duty, and enjoy the mountain independently. I must also mention, that of all the ski resorts we’ve been able to visit during our time abroad, Krvavec had the best skiing conditions, with fresh powder and clear slopes, and almost no lines for the lifts. Lift tickets, lodging, and meals were also incredibly affordable, making this one of our new favorite ski spots!

In all fairness, our President’s Day Weekend trip to Garmisch was super spur of the moment, and as I’ve mentioned before-the snow conditions weren’t anything to write home about for the 2016/17 ski season.  I didn’t love the hotel we chose (again, super last minute and as a very popular ski area only 2.5 hours from Stuttgart, most properties were sold out for the holiday weekend).  The mountain conditions were sloppy and mogul-y, and at one point I just took off my skis and slid down the mountain as a safer alternative to busting something (…at 5 months pregnant…just go ahead and imagine that…)  However, on the flipside we decided to move to Zugspitze and it was a whole new ballgame!  The mountain was far less crowded with much better snow, and many more intermediate skill level slopes.  Since this mountain is so close I’m sure we’ll be back in the area, and this time we’ll plan to ski much more on this side of the range.  *If you like Greek food, there’s a really good restaurant in town called El Greco, a great dinner option!!  We also really enjoyed grabbing a drink at the Iglu-Dorf on top of the mountain.  If you’re looking for a super unique lodging experience, check out their rooms!

We’ve got some great trips planned to new ski spots in Austria, Switzerland and Italy this winter, so pop back soon for more highlights!
